As The Yeras Go passing by
En esta ocasión nos vamos a centrar en un tema del género blues que me emociona, As The Years Go Passing By, un blues para mí magnífico.
La primera vez que tuve conocimiento de la existencia de este tema fue allá por el año 1990, cuando conseguí hacerme con un musicassette del álbum Still Got The Blues de Gary Moore, uno de los discos que tuvo en ese momento mucha importancia al conseguir dar un impulso y relanzar por aquella época el género blues. El tema me encantó, y ahí lo dejé, sin indagar más. Tiempo más tarde cayó en mis manos el álbum Born Under A Bad sign de Albert King, en ese disco me volví a topar con este tema, ambas versiones me habían encantado, me parecían magníficas, es entonces cuando me puse a investigar sobre este tema.
descubrí que As The Year Go passing By había sido compuesto por Deadric Malone, ¿Pero quién era Deadric Malone? Mi investigación me llevó a descubrirque este señor en realidad no existía, en realidad era un pseudónimo de una persona llamada Don Robey. Pues bien, Don Deadric Robey nació en 1930 en Houston, Texas (Estados Unidos), y en su juventud dejó temprano la escuela para dedicarse al mundo del juego. A principios de la déscada de los 30se establece en la zona empresarial negra de Houston donde inicia una brillante carrera como empresario, abriendo primero un servicio de taxis. Depués, concretamente en 1993 abre un salón de diversión llamado Sweet Dreams Cafe, y un año más tarde abre otro llamado Lenox club. Posteriormente cambia de nombre el Sweet Dreams y lo llama Manhattan Club y empieza a contratar para sus locales bandas de música de otros estados. A estos locales habría de sumar un tercero que abriría con un socio, llamado Harlem Grill.

Por si no fuera poco, en 1945 abre también en Houston el Bronze Peacock Dinner Club, un exquisitoy sofisticado local donde también promueve actuaciones. En el Peacock actuaron artistas de la talla de Liones Hamptom y T-Bone Walker entre otros.
En 1947 se convierte en agente de Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, y en 1949 crea su propio sello discográfico, llamado Peacock Records, sello con el que consigue el éxito de artistas como "Gatemotuh" ó Big Mama Thornton y consigue fichar a Little Richard.
En 1952 Don Robey adquiere el sello discográfico de Memphis Duke Records y lo fusiona con Peacock, pasando a llamarse Peacock-Duke, cierra el local Bronze Peacock y lo convierte en local de ensayo y estudio de grabación para su discográfica.
Como se puede observar, Don Robey fue el responsable del desarrollo de la carrera de muchos artistas de R & B y Blues. Don también se dedicó mientras fue el propietario de Peacock-Duke Records a escribir y coescribir canciones que luego grabarían los artistas. Uno de esos temas que escribió bajo el pseudónimo de Deadric malone fue As The Years Go passing by, unblues que sería grabado por primera vez por el artista Fenton Robinson en 1959 en Peacock-Duke. En un principio el tema se tituló As The Years Go By, si bien posteriormente se acabó titulando como lo conocemos ahora, As The Years Go passing By.
Este tema es un blues espectacular, y da igual si escuchais la versión de Fenton Robinson (1959), la de Albert King (1967) ó la de Gary Moore (1990), pues cualquiera de las tres la vais a disfrutar, aunque también podéis buscar las versiones que de este maravilloso tema tema hicieron en su momento los Animals de Eric Burdon (1968), Carlos Santana (la tocó muchas veces antes de decidirse a grabrarla en 1997), George Thogorood & The Destroyers (1982), Boz Scaggs & Bokker T & The MG's (1990), Otis Rush (1994) ó Jeff Haley Band (1995).
