Canciones que nos emocionan: Temple of the King, Rainbow

Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow

     Corría el año 1974, y Ritchie Balckmore que estaba en Deep Purple por entonces no estaba nada contento con la dirección que el grupo estaba tomando, pues desde la llegada de David Coverdale y Glenn Hughes el grupo estaba derivando hacia un sonido influenciado por el funk rock. Por este motivo a principios de 1975 Blackmore decide abandonar Deep Purple y decide crear su propia formación. Para ello decide recurrir al grupo Elf, el cual solía tenlonear asiduamente a Deep Purple y ficha a todos menos al guitarrista (Steve Edwards), quedando el grupo conformado por el mismo Ritchie como lider y guitarrista, Ronnie James Dio como vocalista, Mickey Lee Souley a los teclados, Craig Gruber al bajo y Gary Driscoll a la batería. 

     Una vez conformado el personal del grupo, Ritchie decide ponerle el nombre de Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, pues en un principio la idea del mismo Ritchie sobre el grupo y en concreto este álbum es que sea concebido como un disco en solitario de él.  posteriormente a éste lp Ritchie despediría a todo el personal del grupo menos a Dio, ficharía a otros músicos y acortaría el nombre de la formación pasando a llamarse Rainbow.

Pero volvamos al momento en el que ya tiene Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow conformado, en febrero de 1975 se van a Munich (Alemania) y se meten en los Musicland Studios, donde en apenas un mes graban el material de éste álbum debut, siendo publicado en agosto de 1975  por la discográfica Polydor para Gran Bretaña, Estados Unidos, Canada, Alemania y Japón, y por la discográfica Oyster para el resto de Europa.

     En éste álbum se encuentra otro de esos temas que a mí me emocionan, Temple of the King, el cuál había sido compuesto por Dio y Balckmore. El tema en cuestión habla de un hombre que buscando respuestas emprende un viaje espiritual al misterioso templo del rey, donde acaba encontrándolas. La idea de la composición del tema se le ocurrió a Blackmore, el cuál ya practicaba yoga mucho antes de que se pusiera de moda, y encontrándose viendo un programa de yoga para la salud se le ocurrió hacerlo. 

En cuanto a la parte musical del tema, para su grabación se utilizaron dos guitarras clásicas y una guitarra eléctrica, aunque la eléctrica se escucha muy en el fondo y se percibe a duras penas. Para la melodía usaron una progresión medieval. En un principio, Blackmore quería que el tema comenzara diciendo One day in the year of the badger (un día en el año del tejón), pero debido a la dificultad para cantar esa estrofa se acabó decantando por One day in the year of the fox (un día en el año del zorro).

Of the temple and the king

     Este tema no fue tocado por el grupo hasta mediados de los años 90, y tiene su explicación, según Blackmore el tema contenía unas armonías vocales bastante extrañas en la parte central de la canción y no creía que fuera un tema adecuado para tocarlo en directo. 

    Temple of the King es uno de esos primeros temazos que Blackmore y Dio nos regalarían y que auguraba lo que todavía estaba por llegar y de lo que eran capaces de hacer juntos.
