Finales del año 1984, las imagenes que se sucedían de la terrible hambruna sufrida en el continente africano dejaron marcado a Harry Belafonte, conocido músico, actor y activista social. A Harry se le ocurre la idea de realizar una campaña de recogida de fondos para luchar contra la hambruna en África. La idea empieza a tomar cuerpo cuando el representante de Harry, Ken Kragen le sugiere que forme una gran banda conformada con artistas al estilo de la famosa banda Band Aid. Band Aid no era sino eso, una unión musical de multitud de artistas y grupos procedentes de Inglaterra e Irlanda, y que originalmente fue fundada en 1984 por Bob Geldof y Midge Ure para recaudar fondos contra la hambruna en Etiopía.
Sólo quedaba poner en práctica aquella idea, para ello Kragen convence a Harry Belafonte para que sea una canción original cantada por un numeroso número de artistsas, pues así tendría mayor repercusión e impacto. Lionel Richie decide unirse también al proyecto para echar una mano. para la producción Ken Kragen convence a Quincy Jones para que se encargue la tarea de la producción del tema, y Quincy Jones lo tiene claro y recluta a Michael Jackson. El grupo de trabajo ya estaba creado, Quincy a la producción y Michael y Lionel se encargarían de la composición del tema. Quincy Jones era en ese momento uno de los productores más populares, y lo que es mejor, su agenda estaba llena de gente que se moría por trabajar con él. En cuanto a Lionel Richie, había escrito ya varias canciones en los últimos 7 años que habían sido número 1 en la famosa lista de ventas Billboard Hot 100, Y Michael Jackson acababa de romper el mercado y las listas de ventas con su famoso Thriller, un disco producido por Quincy Jones, y además su popularidad estaba en lo más alto. La cosa no podía pintar mejor.
Para el reclutamiento de artistas, en un principio Lionel Richie involucra a Stevie Wonder, y a partir de ahí se corre la voz y son muchos los artistas que se apuntan al proyecto. Quincy Jones tenía la difícil tarea de lidiar con tanta estrella, y envía una carta de invitación a cada artista advirtiendoles que dejen su ego en la puerta. El 28 de enero de 1985, en los Estudios A&M de Los Ángeles, California (Estados Unidos), se procedía la grabación de We Are The World, tema concebido por Michael Jackson y Lionel Richie.
El elenco de artistas que participan el la grabación es el siguiente, como solitas interpretando una parte Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, James Ingram, Tina Turner, Billy Joel, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Willie Nelson, Al Jarreau, Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry, Daryl Hall, Huey Lewis, Cindi Lauper, Kim Carnes, Bob Dylan y Ray Charles. De la tarea de los coros se encargaron Dan Aykroyd, Harry Belafonte, Lindsey Buckingham, Mario Cipollina, Johnny Colla, Sheila E., Bob Geldof, Bill Gibson, Chris Hayes, Sean Hoper, Jackie Jackson, La Toya Jackson, Marlos Jackson, Randy Jackson, Janet Jackson, Tito Jackson, Waylon Jennings, Bette Milder, John Oates, Jeffrey Osborne, The Pointer Sisters y Smokey Robinson. De la instrumentación de ocuparon Greg Phillinganes a los teclados, Michael Boddicker a los sintetizadores, Paulinho Da Costa a la percusión, Louis Johnson al bajo y John Robinson a la batería.
El tema compuesto por Michael Jackson y Lionel Richie salío a la venta el 7 de marzo de 1985 convirtiendose rápidamente en un himno, siendo el tema estrella del famoso concierto Live Aid de Filadelfia (Estados Unidos) que se celebró de forma simultánea con el concierto Live Aid de Londres (Inglaterra), que tuvieron lugar el 13 de julio de 1985. Tras más de 16 horas de música en aquellos conciertos, fue Lionel Richie junto con todos los artistas invitados al concierto de Filadelfia, quienes se encargaron de poner el broche de oro interpretando We Are The World ante las 95.000 personas presentes allí, y ante las aproximadamente 1500 millones de personas que seguían el evento por televisión.
We Are The World vendió más de 7,5 milloones de copias como sencillo sólo en Estados Unidos, y fue incluida en un álbum musical llamado también We Are The World, vendiendo este más de 3 millones de copias. Tanto el álbum como el sencillo ganaron sendos premios Grammy a canción y disco del año, y todo los relacionado con el sencillo, disco y merchandising consiguió recaudar más de 50 millones de dólares. La compañía discográfica Columbia Records, que se encargó de la grabación y distribución del tema donó todos los costes de producción y distribución a la campaña.
